As Americans age, maintaining good health and bodily wellness is rarely as easy as it was in youth. The body begins to have more difficulty repairing cells, keeping flexibility and avoiding illness. Whether is it a tai chi regimen or Dahn Yoga, the basics of yogic study help aging adults stay well.
A recent meta-study, which appears in the Journal of Aging and Physical Activity, found that practicing yoga appears to help mature Americans stay somewhat healthier. The report took into account 10 previous studies, whose cohorts totalled more than 540 participants altogether.
The researchers, a trio of health scientists from the University of British Columbia, noted that yoga facilitated moderate increases in flexibility, upper and lower body strength, gait, weight loss and balance.
Though they recommended that further study be done on the subject, the study's authors concluded that yoga is likely to have a positive effect on the good health and well-being of older adults.
Practicing the basics of Dahn Yoga may have additional health benefits. Besides keeping the body toned and flexible, the ancient mind-body program allows practitioners to reconnect with their Ki, or life-force – an energy with which they can revitalize themselves.
