For those in Chicago, the Trail of Tears State Forest in Illinois is a popular destination, especially people who enjoy outdoor recreational activities. South of the Ozark Hills, the area is a botanic adventure, featuring 620 different types of trees and plants. There are black and white oaks, hickories, wild azalea shrubs, beech and sugar maple trees, as well as colorful wildflowers to see.

The wildlife here is also varied. From an array of songbirds to opossums, white-tailed deer, bobcats and more, visitors will have endless opportunities to see the animals that inhabit the forest.

Anyone that comes to the Trail of Tears can enjoy the picnic area, as well as several trails for a hiking expedition. There are also sections of the park designated for horseback riding, camping and more.
