It is important to be inclusive in the office.
It is natural for people in any environment to gravitate towards those who share similar likes and dislikes but in the office place it is important that one be as inclusive as possible to ensure that no resentments build up between co-workers.
Often times men (and women) in the workplace talk about last night’s game in whatever sport is in season. While this is perfectly acceptable, they should be sure not to discuss sports in a manner that seems to make them exclusive. If a co-worker who is perhaps not as knowledgeable at sports chimes in with an opinion, employees should be sure to respect this comment and not be dismissive. Such etiquette also extends to other conversation topics as well.
In a similar vein, one should be sure to invite everyone in his or her respective work group out after work if he or she is inviting a significant number of them. This isn’t to say that two or three friends can’t go out together after work but when that group swells to seven or eight people, those who are not invited may feel left out.
Consideration for other people’s feelings is an important part of personal development.
