A researcher found that Ki appears to be the force that flows through the nervous system itself, noting that one of the reasons why acupuncture and tai chi appear to be so effective is that they target and stimulate the nervous system directly.
What is Ki? Yoga enthusiasts will likely tell you that it is the body's life force, the energy that you can feel flowing through your limbs and core when you meditate deeply. Medical experts are not as quick to ascribe the force to a physical process, but recently one researcher suggested that "Ki" may be synonymous with the firings of the nervous system.
Edwin Nicoll, a PhD candidate at the University of Queensland's School of Biomedical Sciences, recently published a dissertation asserting that Ki may after all be electrical potentials, which are small jumps in the electricity coursing through cell membranes.
Nicoll tested his theory by first using alternating- and direct-current electricity resistance to disprove the idea that there are undiscovered electrical channels in the body.
He found instead that Ki appears to be the force that flows through the nervous system itself, noting that one of the reasons why acupuncture and tai chi appear to be so effective is that they target and stimulate the nervous system directly, modifying its response to certain stimuli.
For individuals who are interested in rebalancing the Ki in their bodies, many Dahn Yoga classes are aimed at harnessing the natural forces within.
